From 1943 Shmuel gave assistance to refugees from Poland and Slovakia by finding them accommodation and hiding places, obtaining food for them and maintaining contact with them. He also smuggled Jews across the Hungarian border. During this period of time he operated under the name of Klement Zoltán.
After the Germans invaded Hungary on 19.3.1944, he volunteered to the firemen and, wearing the uniform, he was free to walk around the capital. Shmuel distributed forged documents and, in order to do so, he traveled to country towns. He brought some youngsters back with him to Budapest and arranged accommodation for them in his parents’ house and other places.
Shmuel traveled to forced labor camps carrying forged documents, helped those who wanted to escape arrive in Budapest and gave them accommodation and hiding places.
After the Arrow Cross came to power on 15.10.1944, he liberated young men from the forced labor units that passed through the capital on their way to the east. Shmuel’s underground activities are mentioned in the following books: “We are Witnesses”, “In the Shadow of Death” and “Shmulik, the Anonymous”. Samuel operated with Mordehai Ben David distributing food to the bunkers and children’s houses.
He was a member of Kibbutz Nitzanim.
